Split Bills privacy policy
Effective 24 September 2026.
Split Bills is made by Andrew Sze-To, an individual developer. Questions about this policy go to support@splitbillsapp.com.
The short version: the app keeps your records on your phone. If you sign in, it keeps a copy on a server so you can get them back on another phone. Nothing is sold, shared or used for advertising, and there is no analytics or tracking of any kind.
What stays on your phone
Everything you enter — the people you add, groups, categories, expenses, repayments and reminder templates — is stored in a database on your phone. If you never sign in, none of it leaves the phone. There is no account, and we hold nothing about you.
What happens when you sign in
Signing in is optional. It exists so your records survive a lost phone and can be opened on a second one. When you sign in with Google, two things are stored on our server:
- Your Google identity: the email address, the name and the profile photo link that Google gives us, and an id for your account.
- Your records: the names and notes of people you have added, your groups and categories, each expense (what it was for, how much, in which currency, when, who paid and who owes), each repayment, and your reminder templates.
The app also fetches your Google profile photo once, to show it on the Account screen. That request goes to Google and carries nothing from your records.
Your records can be read only by you, signed in as you. There is no admin view of them, no support tool that opens them, and no other user who can see them.
The people you add
The names you type are your records of who owes whom. They are not matched against contacts or any other list — the app never reads your address book — and they are not sent anywhere except, if you sign in, to your own account. Nobody you add is contacted by us or told they are in your ledger.
Sharing
We share nothing with anyone. The one time information leaves the app by another route is when you tap Share on a reminder: the message you wrote is handed to whichever app you choose, and from there it is between you and that app.
Who runs the servers
- Supabase hosts the database and sign-in service. The project is in Mumbai, India.
- Google handles sign-in. We receive only what is listed above; we do not see your Google password or anything else in your Google account.
Both act on our instructions to store and return your data. Neither is permitted to use it for their own purposes.
How long we keep it
For as long as your account exists. The server keeps no separate backups, so when you delete your account, everything on the server is gone at once.
Deleting your account
In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. This removes your account and every record on the server, and signs out any other phone. The records on the phone you are holding stay there, and the app keeps working without an account. To remove those too, use Settings → Erase all data on this phone, which also signs you out; the copy in your account is not affected.
If you no longer have the app, email support@splitbillsapp.com from the Google address you signed in with and we will delete the account for you.
Children
Split Bills is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly hold an account for anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created one, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear at this address with a new effective date. A change that affects what we collect will also be announced in the app before it takes effect.
